Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer and Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser. When she was a
baby she was already an avid performer, performing commercials on TV for her
parents' amusement. However, she chose to concentrate on dancing. After
studying classical ballet for nine years at Spain's National Conservatory, she
continued her studies under a group of highly acclaimed dancers. She realized
what she wanted to do at the age of 15 when she defeated more than 300 other
girls at an audition for an agency for talents. She was then offered roles in
Spanish music videos and TV. This contract brought her many roles, and opened
the way to a future in the world of big screens. Cruz was first seen in a movie
in The Greek Labyrinth (1993) (The Greek Labyrinth) Then she appeared briefly
in the Timothy Dalton thriller Framed (1992). Her next film, Belle Epoque
(1992) was an Oscar-winning production where she played one of the four sisters
that were fighting to win the heart of a handsome deserter army soldier. It
also received several Goyas in Spain that is the Spanish equivalent to the
Academy Awards. Cruz was a well-known Spanish actress thanks to her three- to
four films per year, which was a growing list. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered
her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who
would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the
lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a
huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her
luck changed when she was awarded the Best Actress Goya for her role in the
film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). Cruz had a few more attempts
at English-language films, but her first international hit was Almodovar's All
About My Mother (1999) in which she played an unchaste but well-meaning nun.
After the film was flooded with awards and praises, Cruz was suddenly being
sought after on both sides of the Atlantic. The American comedy Woman on Top
(2001) which was her subsequent major project, is about an American chef with
