Penelope Cruz Sanchez

Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer and Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser. When she was a baby she was already an avid performer, performing commercials on TV for her parents' amusement. However, she chose to concentrate on dancing. After studying classical ballet for nine years at Spain's National Conservatory, she continued her studies under a group of highly acclaimed dancers. She realized what she wanted to do at the age of 15 when she defeated more than 300 other girls at an audition for an agency for talents. She was then offered roles in Spanish music videos and TV. This contract brought her many roles, and opened the way to a future in the world of big screens. Cruz was first seen in a movie in The Greek Labyrinth (1993) (The Greek Labyrinth) Then she appeared briefly in the Timothy Dalton thriller Framed (1992). Her next film, Belle Epoque (1992) was an Oscar-winning production where she played one of the four sisters that were fighting to win the heart of a handsome deserter army soldier. It also received several Goyas in Spain that is the Spanish equivalent to the Academy Awards. Cruz was a well-known Spanish actress thanks to her three- to four films per year, which was a growing list. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her luck changed when she was awarded the Best Actress Goya for her role in the film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). Cruz had a few more attempts at English-language films, but her first international hit was Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999) in which she played an unchaste but well-meaning nun. After the film was flooded with awards and praises, Cruz was suddenly being sought after on both sides of the Atlantic.
